"My broad discomfort with having my photo
taken means I often crave clothes that will wear me.Â
I suppose the childish, cross part of me also likes theÂ
idea of trying to interrupt the stream of beautyÂ
images broadcast by traditional and social media.Â
I like the idea of something slightly weird or strangeÂ
turning up amongst those pictures. That felt like anÂ
underlying principle for the press tour of seasonÂ
one. The confusing thing about publicity events,Â
premiers, invitation-only whatever-events, is theÂ
encompassing myth that states: this is not work,Â
this is fun! and normal! But it isnât normal. Itâs
marketing. Itâs orchestrated. Itâs camera-facing.Â
And itâs definitely work. I find it really helpful toÂ
re-contextualise those events as work. I loveÂ
thinking through these things with Rose Forde.Â
A big conversation we had last year was aroundÂ
the idea of a uniform â one outfit, in differentÂ
colours possibly, that one could wear to everyÂ
event â a work uniform."
Playful, charismatic, cheeky and impossiblyÂ
eloquent, actor Emma D'Arcy's commitment toÂ
bucking expectations and forging their ownÂ
path in the film industry has meant their fans haveÂ
found freedom in places Emma had failed to findÂ
it growing up. Emma opens doors and urgesÂ
others to follow, seemingly uttering: If it doesnâtÂ
exist already, go out and create it.Â
Now, with House of the Dragon having returnedÂ
for its sophomore season, two short films helmedÂ
by their own production company under theirÂ
belt, and an upcoming debut at the Royal CourtÂ
Theatre later this year â alongside actors BenÂ
Whishaw and Kayla Meikle for Maggie NelsonâsÂ
Bluets â Emmaâs own arc is characterised by theÂ
same beautifully haunting courage, vulnerabilityÂ
and generosity you find in their luminousÂ
performances on screen. So how did we getÂ
here and what creative life does Emma wantÂ
to lead? Like, any good film plot â the latter is stillÂ
up for debate. But something we do know? EveryÂ
step is intentional. Here, their House of the DragonÂ
co-star, Matthew Needham, got in touch to talk to ourÂ
Summer 2024 cover star about their art schoolÂ
beginnings, finding their corner in film, the powerÂ
of clothes, and why House of the Dragon seasonÂ
two allowed them to wear Rhaenyra better.
